Blue flowers are some of the most striking plants around and can add a rich splash of color to any garden. Plant them in a cluster of all blue or mix them in with other flowers for a rainbow of color.

When planting flowers, it is important to remember to follow the instructions on the tag for the plant. Always buy plants that will thrive in the conditions in which you intend to grow them. A plant that loves sun will not do well in a shady area and you will only be disappointed with the results.

Delphinium aka Butterfly Blue - Bright blue delicate flowers adorn a plant that blooms in early to mid summer. It reaches 10 tall and prefers a sunny location with rich moist soil.

Campanula aka Blue Carpet - Bright blue to lilac colored flowers bloom for weeks in the middle of summer. This low growing perennial grows to 4 and prefers full sun with well-drained soil.

Penstemon aka Blue Buckle - This plant has tubular shaped blooms in blue to purple and flowers in mid summer to early fall. It grows to 15 and likes well-drained soil with full or partial sun.

Hydrangea aka Nikko Blue - Gigantic clumps of blue flowers adorn this shrub for most of the summer. In the fall, the flowers turn a golden color. This plant is a new variety that prefers rich soil but will grow in shade, partial sun, or full sun.

Vinca - Medium blue flowers and glossy green leaves form a carpet that grows to about 6 tall and blooms in mid spring. This plant will grow in most soil conditions, in the shade or sun.

Ajuga aka Bronze Beauty - This short bushy plant has spikes of blue flowers that grows quickly. Great as a ground cover or in raised beds. It blooms in spring and prefers a shady area.

Scabiosa aka Butterfly Blue - A bushy perennial with lavender blue flowers that bloom from June to October. This plant likes full sun and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Verbena aka Babylon Blue - Blue purple flowers petals adorn a plant that blooms in early spring. Great for window boxes and planters.

The eyebrow pencil should be used sparingly and fill in those areas only that requires it. For women having very thick eyebrows, eyebrow pencil must be neglected. Rather, tweezing and arching of the brows may be required in such cases. When tweezing, make sure to hold the skin tightly. Tweeze at the root of the hair and in the direction that the hair grows. Remove only those hairs under the arch of the eyebrow.

Eye Pencils
Eye pencils should glide on smoothly, without dragging the skin. If they are soft and crumbly, keep them in a freezer before applying, If they are too hard and pull at the skin, soften the point first by gently running it over the back of the hand.

Eyeliner
Eyeliner is used to define the shape of an eye. It is also used to make the base of the eye lashes appear thicker. The eyeliner colours should be consistent with the hair colour. For a blonde or brunette, brown eyeliner is a best option.

Eye Mascara
Mascara gives the appearance of larger eye lashes. When applying makeup, it is applied in the end. For those eyes having brown or black hair, black mascara would be most appropriate. For lighter or blonde, brownish black mascara is preferred.

Applying Concealer
Concealers will be applied to remove dark circles, scars, tattoos, blemishes and pimples so as to enhance the appearance of the face. Concealer goes under foundation and is used for spot treatments. They are more opaque than regular makeup, but still need to be matched to the skin tone and are applied before using the harmony foundation. They are also formulated that the subsequent application of makeup does not remove them.

Applying Mascara
Before applying mascara, curling of eye lashes with a lash curler is necessary to open up the eyes. This will frame the eyes, especially if the lashes are short. Mascara is applied in two coats by placing the finger about mid-lid or on the eyebrow. Once the first application has dried, apply a second. For thicker lashes, carefully apply mascara to the upper side of the lashes as well.

Applying Eyebrow Pencil
Draw thin lines in the direction of eyebrows to define and fill in light areas. Never draw an outline around the eyebrow as this gives an unnatural look.

Applying Eyeliner
The desired effect of an eyeliner pencil is to create the illusion of darkness just above the lash line to enhance the look of the lashes. Gently pull the lid skin to start at the inner part of the lid and draw a thin line smoothly and evenly along the upper lid. A very thin pencil line should be extended very closely to the lash line along the innermost part of the upper lid near the nose. This is often forgotten yet always adds an attractive natural definition to the eye. For achieving a natural look, place a few tiny dots of colour close to the lash roots along the lowers lashes.

Applying Liquid Eyeliner
Liquid eyeliner achieves a more dramatic emphasis to the eyes. It is best used when a dramatic and more glamour look is desired. The tip is to carefully apply so as to obtain the look one wants.

Applying Eye Shadow
The purpose for applying eye shadow to the lids is to maximise the eye shape using up to three different eye shades: light, medium and dark. Medium tones are generally more neutral base shades. Light is for highlighting the shade and the dark is for contouring. For smoother eye shadow application that last longer, try applying a thin layer of yellow corrector powder to the eyelids before applying shadow.

To reduce eye strain and improve vision is a must for every adoring eye. Here are few exercises for keeping the eye comfortable and rejuvenating stamina.

Massaging the temples will help to relax and lessen eyestrain. By using the tips of the index or second finger gently rotate the depression on either side of the forehead on a level with eyebrows. Do this for a minute or two changing from a clockwise to an anti clockwise motion from time to time. One can do this easy exercise particularly to feel less tense.

Using the first two fingers and thumb of either hand just gently pinch or rub the bony bridge of the nose. This helps great for removing tension and headaches.

Just below the cheekbone and under the outside corner of each eye is an important massage area. Any fingertip will do to stimulate this location. Simply rotate both sides at the same time using gentle pressure. One can feel an effect on the eyes when trying to smile at the same time.

Barbara: I think that each of us senses that our culture is going through a breakdown that is also an emerging breakthrough. That breakthrough has many dimensions, and there is as yet no clearly defined image. It's very exciting because of that. Let's talk a bit about the emerging set of possibilities.

Hazel: Can I start the ball rolling by saying that I think one of the new images that I feel is very pregnant with possibility is the idea that there will be a new paradigm of public order, and that women will be very much a part of it. It's not going to replay all of the dominance-submission games of history, potentially anyway.

Every revolution in history has been a tragic inversion, and the most graphic and tragic inversion in recent history was the revolt of the Hutu against the Watutsi: the oppressors were actually cut off at the knees by the revolting tribe in order to bring them down to their physically smaller size. There never have been any kinds of games, basically, that have not been patriarchal dominance-submission games of one type or another.

The women that I have been dealing with in all kinds of areas, and particularly in the political sphere, have this sense that many of the women who first got into the women's liberation movement were strongly into the mode of eing against. This is of course typical of liberation movements. And immediately it began to move into the imitative phase, just like the black revolution ? black corporate executives were wearing Brooks Brothers suits with vests; so women, too, began to parody the male corporate executive and chomp on cigars, knock back scotches, talk about the deals they had made, and so on. But I think we're getting beyond the imitative stage. What I think is exciting is that there is now a new generation of women coming into the movement that are saying No! to all of that.

I think that this new image has to do with nonhierarchical forms of communication based on activating people's self-organizing capabilities. The hologram for me is a very pregnant image, even though when you examine it closely the technology doesn't really fit the image. It's the endeavor to build societies of voluntary restraint based on the fact that people share the same vision of reality ? the little blue planet, or whatever.

What this allows is a new calculus of self-interest. The old economic calculus of self-interest, when married to American compulsive individuality, led us to believe that we were all separate little atoms. We are now coming to the true understanding of self-interest: that self-interest is coterminus with community interest, with species interest, and with planetary interest.

I think that women in particular are really playing around with these sorts of images. The female style, of course, is the metaphysical division of labor, voluntary autonomy based on a better program of mapping the system in your head, and networking.

Jean: Very good.

Hazel: I think that females are all networkers by instinct. One of the joys of being at the sort of conference where you run into people like Margaret Mead ? she's always been a very high-level networker ? is that you realize that many of us are networkers ? you're a networker, Jean; you're a networker, Barbara; I'm a networker. This is a marvelous lateral form of communication. We're getting away from the iron filings all attracted to the dictator mode; instead we're doing the nucleating.

Jean: Breadth rather than vertical models.

Hazel: Yes.

Jean: You know, I've done some rather intensive research on the nature of the female mind, the nature of female psychology, and also brain function. In extraordinary ways my research confirms what you are projecting here.

It began because I was teaching at Marymount College, and I was also teaching at Columbia. I began to notice that if I was teaching, for example, L'Etre et Le Neant (Being and Nothingness) of Sartre to the boys, I would do it in a very masculine way with didactic analysis: A, B, C, D; subpoint 1, 2, 3, 4 . . . and the boys would eat it up. I would go to Marymount the next afternoon and do the same thing and the girls would say: Oh go away, go away! Not relevant! What do you mean it's not relevant? You used to like the way I teach It?s not relevant! Why? We don?t know.

It began to dawn on me that perhaps phylogeny was rising. Because for the past four hundred thousand years by the time they were twenty they'd had two husbands killed, three babies, six miscarriages. . . . It was as if they were saying, Not relevant; there is no context in this education; there is no networking. . . .

So I said, It's evolution; it's four hundred thousand years of a different kind of context. Maybe we can do something about it and relate this to your personal lives. Let's start with Being and Nothingness. What is it you're objecting to? They said, 'It doesn?t relate. So I said: All right, let's try a different way of teaching. Everybody close your eyes, and in a moment you're going to look at your hand. And it's going to be . . . not a hand, but a thing ? an alien entity attached to your wrist. Then I would extend this hingness throughout their whole bodies. What I was doing was creating the mind and soul of Jean-Paul Sartre ? his psychopathology before matter. All his philosophy is, is an extended psychopathology. Once they had gotten into that they knew it from the inside; they dove into the text and began to come up with brilliant, brilliant insights.

I began to ask: Why is it that good female education has existed for perhaps seventy-five years now, and yet so few women have gone into professional circles? It dawned on me, in observing the way that women learned compared to the way that men learned, that all we were doing was providing second-rate male education based on the paradigms of the male nervous system.

Hazel: That's fantastic!

Ohio State Buckeyes: Girls of OSU and Men of OSU Calendars

Since 1982, Girls of OSU and Men of OSU calendars have been making history. More than a dozen versions of OSU calendars have appeared in the last quarter century, featuring Ohio State students - and some professional models - in various states of dress (and undress).



More than other universities, Ohio State University seems to be an attractive place for publishing pinup calendars. If South Bend is known for gold domes and Gainesville is famous for funny mushrooms, then college calendars (and controversies surrounding them) have put Columbus on the map. OSU's thousands of loyal alumni are a network of ready customers spread across the country, eager to relive their college days with fun-oriented calendars.



Sean Ashbrook, who published several calendars featuring students of both sexes, gives insight to the marketability of calendars: To make a profit with a calendar of female Ohio State students, you must appeal to Ohio State Alumni. Alumni men are eager to buy calendars featuring college girls - harking back to fun days on the Ohio State campus ...carefree times before paying bills and changing baby diapers. In contrast, Campus Men Calendars targeted fans of Abercrombie and Fitch male models - people nationwide - not just OSU alumni - who find college guys attractive.



Ashbrook said the male calendars' photos were always more provocative for several reasons: college males find it more acceptable to pose semi-nude and the market rewards risqu? photos with higher sales.



Moreover, parents are more comfortable with their sons disrobing, rather than daddy's little girl doing do, Ashbrook said.



He notes the irony and sexism in the naming of female versus male calendars. Females who appear in calendars are usually referred to as girls. However, males who appear are referred to as men. It says that when women pose for a calendar, they are being less mature than when males pose.



1982 - Calendar Men are Born

After years of OSU calendars published by Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, featuring female students and models, the first known calendar featuring males is published by Evelyn Moore of Groveport, a Columbus suburb. Moore was inspired to create The Men of OSU after viewing a P.M. Magazine television show about a University of Michigan-themed calendar, featuring male students. This first male calendar is strictly black and white and shirtless.



1983 - OSU Calendars Go To The Dogs

Inspired by the many students who exercise their canine companions on The Oval and in Mirror Lake, OSU students Cary Gregory, Jim Kargiotis and Tim Brown publish The Dogs Of OSU calendar.



1986 - OSU Calendars Come Of Age

Buckeye student entrepreneurs Scott Jordan, Tony Campagni and Ed Allen publish the Buckeye Men calendar in color with wholesome photos.



1987 - OSU Calendars Get Philanthropic

Ohio State's Alpha Gamma Delta sorority publishes Faces Of A Crowd black and white calendar, featuring fully clothed frat boy/students. Profits benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.



1988 - America Wakes Up To OSU Calendars

OSU sophomore entrepreneur Sean Ashbrook releases Images: Men Of The Scarlet & Gray full-color calendar, featuring swimsuit-clad male students. Legal threats from the university administration draw national attention to Men of the Scarlet & Gray.



1989 - No Gender Bias In OSU Calendars

Publishers follow-up with two black and white OSU calendars: Women Of The Scarlet & Gray: Legends and Men Of The Scarlet & Gray: Legends. Each has an underwear model theme that pays homage to popular Calvin Klein underwear advertising.



June 1990 - OSU Calendars Become A Small Business

Success with the underwear theme causes the calendar operation to be expanded, producers travel with a company of photographers, models and assistants to Florida beaches to photograph Women of the Scarlet & Gray and Campus Men.



September 1990 - Where OSU Calendars Go, Scandal Follows

Publishers release the full-color Women of the Scarlet & Gray and Campus Men calendars amid published reports that several of the female models are not Ohio State Buckeyes, including two who are high school students. An uproar ensues. Publishers receive complaints form alumni and stores pull the calendars from store shelves.



1991- Even Playboy Appreciates OSU Calendar Females

Four students who appeared in the 1991 Women of the Scarlet & Gray calendar are selected by Playboy magazine to appear in its Girls of the Big Ten issue. Later in the year, publishers release the full-color 1992 Women of the Scarlet & Gray and Campus Men, featuring only Ohio State students. Cindy Cooper, daughter of OSU Head Football Coach John Cooper, is Miss July.



1992 - Is That Oprah Calling?

Publishers release the 1993 Women of the Scarlet & Gray and Campus Men calendars, both photographed in full color in Key West. Producers from the Oprah Winfrey Show take notice of the male calendar's more suggestive photos and invite a male model to appear on the air.



1993 - Campus Men and More Campus Men

Publishers release two OSU male calendars. One titled Cool: College Hunks shows students fully clothed in Miami Beach. The second, Hot: University Hunks depicts the same students in semi-nude photos in Key West. Not to be outdone, L'Esprit Models, a Columbus agency, publishes Scarlet & Gray Calendar: Ladies Edition, also photographed in Key West. After filing suit against the female models for showing up late at promotional events after the calendar was released, the court turn the tables and award judgments against the modeling agency for too harsh a contract.



1993 - OSU Male Calendars Meet Racial Equality

African-American male students take center stage as OSU graduate student Jarralynne S. Fletcher publishes a full-color Black Men On Campus calendar for 1994.



1996 - Haven't We Seen These Guys Somewhere?

Hot: University Hunks, is re-released with new dates as a 1997 calendar and sold nationally through magazine ads.



August 1999 - See You In Court

The Ohio State University files a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to block publishers from distributing the already-printed 2000 version of Scarlet & Gray Girls. University lawyers claim the title infringes on an unregistered trademark belonging to OSU. They argue the decades-old fight song Buckeye Battle Cry contains the words scarlet and gray making this phrase the property of Ohio State. They also say calendar photos depict females in team-issued OSU athletic uniforms. Ashbrook knuckles under and allows the university to destroy all 10,000 copies of the female calendar.



September 1999 - Down But Not Out

Publishers re-shoot three photos from the Scarlet & Gray Girls calendar and release Campus Girls: Final Edition. It becomes his last calendar featuring female students.



October 1999 - Sean Ashbrook releases a version of the Campus Men calendar for 2000 that is photographed in Florida and sanitized of all OSU references. Producers from The Jenny Jones Show contact four of the male models to appear on air.



September 2000 - Sports theme

Sean Ashbrook publishes the 2001 edition of Campus Men with a new theme of titilating photos of college varsity athletes in various stage of undress. Producers chose black and grey athletic uniforms without obvious OSU connections.



September 2002 - Number 16 and Out!

Campus Men publishes the 2001 edition of Campus Men It is their 16th and last men of OSU calendar.



September 2003 - Angels fly across campus

Male calendar model John Wong publishes a female calendar with his roommates. Titled Campus Angels, each photo shows a campus coed wearing white angel wings in honor of Victoria Secret advertising.



September 2006 - Girls of OSU Back on the Beach

Company titled Student Body University shoots a swimsuit calendar of Ohio State Buckeye female students. In a twist, they title it Girls of OSU in contrast to the use of Scarlet & Gray for 14 years. Female calendars had not used OSU in the title since 1982.





Campus Men is credited with being the first to successfully market pinup calendars featuring OSU college guys & girls. Campus Men also offers modeling tips for college students. The most recent editions of calendar men and calendar girls is available.
